Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Contractors Association of New York City, Inc.
About Us

Purpose and Organization

NYC SMACNA was incorporated in February of 1898, more than a century ago.

NYC SMACNA is a trade association of member contractors who produce custom-built ductwork for air-distribution systems, manufacture related products, perform roofing and specialty work, and provide testing and balancing of the finished job. The sheet metal trade is unique in construction as it not only installs its product but sketches and fabricates it as well.

NYC SMACNA addresses issues common to its member firms. It serves members' needs by improving their business environment through education, labor relations, technical standards, and industry representation.

NYC SMACNA represents its members' best interests with labor and the construction community and assists them in becoming the most knowledgeable, responsible, and successful business people possible.

Administration
NYC SMACNA is governed by its ten-member Board of Directors and its Executive Committee. Our president is Michael Checchi, the vice president is Ronald J. Palmericki, the treasurer Robert Schratmeier and William Rothberg, Esq., serves as its secretary and executive director. Thomas Doherty is the associate director, and Barbara Kranis is the Association's managing director, assisted by Elizabeth Castillo, comptroller, and Anna Medrano.

The officers and staff are available to answer any questions you may have by telephone (718-624-4600), by fax (718-855-9468), by e-mail (mail@nycsmacna.org), or at the Technical Services page or Contact page on this website. Our offices are located at 16 Court Street, Suite 2100, Brooklyn, New York 11241.

Our Logo
NYC SMACNA's logo identifies contractors affiliated with our Association. Look for our red, white and blue logo displayed on trucks, toolboxes, and hardhats all around the city. It symbolizes the pride our members and their employees feel in being part in the unionized construction trade.

Member Services

Business Education
NYC SMACNA offers publications and self-study programs to firm principals, senior managers, supervisors, and foremen on financial management, project management, and issues impacting the changing marketplace. NYC SMACNA conducts educational programs to keep its members abreast of current business and financial practices needed to operate as successful sheet metal contractors. Circulation of survey results on financial and computer information and practices in the industry keeps the members informed by providing up-to-the minute data. NYC SMACNA sponsors a Workers' Compensation Group for its members, and it provides information regarding changes in tax codes, pending legislation, and legal matters.

Safety
NYC SMACNA keeps its members current regarding proper safety measures to be used in their shops and at job sites. A series of "Toolbox Talks" was developed for supervisory staff to use in instructing workers on the job. Safety programs, publications, bulletins, and videos are made available to assist members in establishing and managing effective compliance with OSHA and EPA requirements.

Meetings and Conventions
NYC SMACNA holds Membership Meetings several times a year to afford members a face-to-face forum for discussion of current matters of interest and concern. Members attend the national SMACNA Annual Convention and share experiences with hundreds of other sheet metal contractors from around the country. To learn what meetings and conventions are planned, see our News/Calendar of Events section.

Labor Relations
NYC SMACNA represents its members' interests in the negotiation of the industry-wide Collective Bargaining Agreement with Sheet Metal Workers' Local Union No. 28.

NYC SMACNA and Local Union No. 28 members comprise the Joint Adjustment Board, which promotes harmonious labor-management relations through the use of a grievance procedure, arbitration, and mediation service.

NYC SMACNA conducts seminars and programs to educate contractors about labor-management interaction, labor law, mutual-gains bargaining techniques, and dispute resolution.

NYC SMACNA members participate as Trustees on the Local Union No. 28 Funds, the Labor Management Committee, the Joint Apprenticeship Committee and Trust, and on many ad hoc committees.

Workforce Training
Apprentices - The industry requires successful completion of a four-year apprenticeship program and maintains its own full-time state of the art School Facility for this purpose located at 139-20 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, New York. This process gives our contractors access to the best-trained, specialized apprentices who, only after meeting rigorous standards, become fully fledged sheet metal journeypersons.

Continuing Education - Evening courses are offered to keep journeypersons current with new techniques and to focus on special skills.

Technical Services

Publications
Technical standards and manuals developed by SMACNA have found worldwide acceptance by the construction community, including local, state, and federal government agencies. SMACNA standards and manuals address all facets of the sheet metal and HVAC industry, from duct construction and installation to indoor air quality, from energy recovery to roofing, from solar energy to welding. Currently, SMACNA has more than thirty publications in circulation, which are continuously reviewed and updated as required. The full library of standards, specifications, technical books, manuals and practices are made available to our members and to the industry.

Industry Affiliations
NYC SMACNA acts as liaison to the construction industry by representing our members at the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE), the N.Y. Building Congress (tel 212-481-9230), the Building Trades Employers Association (tel 212-481-0240), and the Subcontractors Trade Association (tel 212-398-6220), as well as through involvement with the New York City Buildings Department.
